Omar Elmenofy is a core participant of the Middle East and North African (MENA) Initiative. His Peer Empowerment and Support Mentors is Teresa Tourvas.


Omar Elmenofy is half Greek and half Egyptian and has been brought up for the past 19 years in the island kingdom of Bahrain. Omar was born in September of 1994, and is currently 22 years old. His interests are travelling and exploring different cultures, learning different languages, volunteering work which leads to positive social development and professional development, photography, trying different cuisines, playing sports and also going to regular fitness classes which leads to an improvement in his personal well-being. Omar also enjoys socialising and building his social networks but also using social media platforms to bring up important issues which he believes should be raised.


In 2016 Omar graduated from the University of Sussex in the UK with a double major in Economics and International Development. This degree has taught him how to use economic tools to tackle global issues; the global issues he focused on were: global poverty, income inequality, gender inequality, economic development, sustainable development, environmental development, human rights and political instability. Omar had to complete one dissertation for International Development and a statistics project for Economics in his final year. In his dissertation he wrote about ‘The European Refugee Crisis: The Failure of Refugee Burden- Sharing and the Development Implications for Europe’ and for his statistics project he wrote about ‘The Welfare State and the Determinants of Life Expectancy: Evidence from EU countries for 2013’.


Omar Elmenofy is going to start his Integrated Master’s Degree in September 2017 in International Hospitality Management. During his degree at Sussex University, he worked as an International Student Ambassador where he represented the International Office at several campus-based events as well as traveled to UK based events with International Officers. Moreover, he represented students from Europe, Middle East and Africa whereby he conducted live chats over the phone as well as lead several campus tours with prospective international students from these regions. In addition, he was a Residential Advisor at his university where he played an instrumental role within a productive and successful team of RAs. Further, he also worked as a Social Media Ambassador where he took part in innovative social media project work where he marketed different events and trips he took part in, which were organized by the International Student Support (ISS) and Sussex University, to show prospective international students what it is like to study at the University of Sussex.


After graduation, Omar completed the most advanced on-line TEFL course and later went on to intern in Ningbo, China as an English teacher for two months. He taught children from ages 3 to 5 years old at both the Early and Teen centers. Furthermore, he has completed a graduate internship programme in Manama, Bahrain as a Graduate Intern at a 5-star upscale hotel called The Diplomat Radisson Blu Hotel.

Currently, he is interning at another graduate internship programme in Zallaq, Bahrain as a Graduate Intern at a 5-star luxury hotel/resort called the Sofitel Bahrain Zallaq Thalassa Sea & Spa. Omar is building and developing his Hospitality Management skills as he is hoping to become a successful hotelier one day in the future. The Ancient Greek concept of “Keep a healthy mind in a healthy body” is one where he believes very firmly in. He takes an active role in a wide range of extra-curricular activities including MUN debating, sports and have also completed the Duke of Edinburgh Gold Award in Oman. He has played competitive tennis for many years in a professional tennis academy in Bahrain and was also part of the tennis and athletics team at Sussex University.
