Short Bio

Joseph Hategekimana is a Peer Empowerment and Support Mentors of the Reinventing Democracy project.

He is the peer mentor of Stepan Kment from the European Initiative and Melvis Lu-uh Kimbi from the African Initiative.


Founder & Chief Executive Officer of Terram Pacis, Joseph is a Human Rights activist, an Associate Fellow of the Royal Commonwealth Society, a 2015 Queen’s Young Leaders Peer Advisory Mentor and a Youth Leader of the concluded World Humanitarian Summit consultation process in youth field.


Joseph is a native of Rwanda, he has lived in the Democratic Republic of the Congo, Kenya, Belgium and currently lives in Norway. He is fluent both in French and English. Since 2005, he has been active in the Rwandan reconciliation process in the aftermath of the 1994 Rwandan Genocide and refugees rights of young people affected by the 1998 DR Congo war. He implemented several projects with youth interests and needs in human rights, community reconstruction, social innovation, art of waging peace and democracy initiatives.

Joseph completed his studies in Space Physics in 2012. As the Founder and CEO of a youth based non-profit organization, he has completed various training and internships in Human Rights Education, Education for Democracy, Social Entrepreneurship, Social Innovation, Art of waging peace, Conflict transformation, dialogue, leadership and sustainability and project management, all delivered in non-formal educational settings.

For the past five years, Joseph has been working with young people on various projects that promote the recognition of non-formal education. His cultural background and focus on youth initiatives have led him to a number of opportunities in consultation and leadership roles – particularly on projects with concerns on lifelong learning initiatives, cultural diversity, challenges of social inclusion (human rights, gender issues and democracy participation) and the role of young people in post-conflict reconstruction.
