Takwa Makhlouf is a core participant of the Middle East and North African (MENA) Initiative. Her Peer Empowerment and Support Mentors is Teresa Tourvas.

Takwa Makhlouf is a young bi-national French-Tunisian, 18 years old student. She grew up in the city of Grenoble where she discovered her interest in politics, human rights and citizen participation to the society. In order to acquire more knowledge related to these interests, Takwa decided to follow Law studies at the University Grenoble Alpes (Grenoble, France). During her first year (2016/2017) she learned a lot about the History of the institutions, Political Sciences, Constitutional Law and International relations.

Raised by Tunisian and activist’s parents, who have militated all their lives for Democracy in Tunisia, she learned that Democracy was not always granted and that it was something that needed always to be protected, challenged, and improved by the participation of the citizens themselves. Therefore, she wanted, since her youngest age, to participate in political life and particularly in international diplomacy.

Her dream is to be part of the change that will make the world a safer place for all, where everyone is heard and where youth implication is made possible and encouraged. To have a first professional experience in line with this subject, she performed two internships at the National Assembly of Tunisia after the revolution, one of them during the redaction of the new constitution of the country. Here she participated to a historical moment: the construction of a democracy.

Takwa Makhlouf also participated to various MUN (multiple times as a delegate and as the president of a council) one of them was organized in partnership with the WHO and WTO in their headquarters in Geneva. Takwa is also part of several student and youth associations who promote coexistence between people from various convictions, the knowledge of the Middle East and the strengthening of youth’s debating skills.

Takwa was the youngest participant in the MENA initiative for the project of Reinventing Democracy. She grew up in a world where digital is a part of people’s life and especially of youth’s. Therefore, she believes that Democracy needs to evolve and consider the reality of today’s world in order to be coherent with people’s expectations and needs.
